Original Manga
On the front cover where it says, "Kodansha Comics" is Mango Gothic regular. It is 29 dollars. No known equivalents.

The title pages on Sailor Moon and "Act": Caslon Italic Swashes (29) is only one of the two.
For example The P, E, I, second T, R G are all of this font, however the other letters the A (for internal) and N (also for internal use) aren't that font.

The second title pages font for the Act title: Caslon Swash Italic WFA is similar to the second font except on the N. You can download that here: www.whatfontis.com/Caslon-Swas… The original is definitely a Caslon Swash family variation or modification. (Takeuchi-sensei definitely had a good typographer on the team for type setting considering they had the sense to use this second font for the internal N's and the A's.)

The font used for the signs is either hand drawn or a font in house. I couldn't find it, even in Japanese. And a Japanese website claimed that it was done in house.

Osabu, the editor said about the Japanese fonts: 基本セリフは、アンチック体です。これは、ほとんどの漫画で共通です。心の中で思うセリフは、セーラームーンの場合、OH-no.2という書体だったと思います。

OH-no.2, according to Osabu is the dialogue font (the one in the bubbles) font. (I can't find it. TT) If anyone has a link, please let me know through whatever method you like.

Close Equivalent for the bubble Hiragano Mincho Pro (comes with most machines that run later than Vista and Mac OS X) (The original is a Mincho font)

But it's an astounding 44,479 Yen 528 dollars. (US)

Japanese Manga Renewal Volumes

The font used for the signs in Japanese and the internal fonts seem to be designed in house. (I looked in Japanese) The Japanese fonts continue to be elusive at best. There are close equivalents though.

モード明朝 (Mode Mincho) combined with Matisse Elegant (also called Mathis Elegant) can fake the basics of the Sailor Moon sign, but you need to fuss a lot to get a result that looks good--I'd also recommend you know Japanese so you know how to form the kana. A Gothic font is used for the title page.

Garamond Nr2 SH-Con is the font for the numbers on the contents page. (It's in that family). It's 24 dollars. You can kinda pass with Baskerville or another Garamond font.

Apple Chancery was used to the "Pretty Guardian" part.

Harrington is the font on "Sailor Moon"

the "contents" font is done in Courier New. Also used for the act titles.

Japanese Complete Collection Volumes

Matisse Elegant is used for the cover. (the Sailor Moon Sign) You can DL it per the website that Osabu provided for quite a bit of yen.

Sailor Moon in English looks like Acadian, Caslon Swash D and Cabaletta, Campanile

Pretty Guardian is written in caslon 540 which is about 24 dollars US. (Or is in that family at least)

Mixx Manga

English/Italian Renewal Volumes

The Kodansha English/Italian Manga title font is a modded version of Mutlu Ornamental (free) The original font is ummm... fugly as all hell. (Not that I like copperplate fonts that much to begin with) With permission from the creator I might post a Sailor Moon version of said font. (I still think the M should be round without the flourish, the S should get less of a flourish and the n should not connect at all.... so I'll probably do two versions if I buy Fontographer5.)

"Codename" and "Pretty Guardian": Occidental (Also used in the renewal English volumes for Codename and Pretty Guardian as well as for "Naoko Takeuchi")

Title page font: Harrington.

"Content" and "act" are closest to Courier New. Also used for the act titles.

Apple Chancery was used for the chapter page for "Pretty soldier" (obviously a Mac font)


Anime

Eclat (for SuperS) (not free, mac font) [Try Creampuff as a free substitute]

A stretched version of Big Caslon was used for the Japanese Sailor Moon Box sets. (Free)

Japanese title fonts for the title cards is a Gothic font, but I can't find it.

Occidental was also used for the English portion of the title.


NA Anime

NA Sailor Moon font for the title--the closest is Birch, which is a paid font.
Neo Balllikavak was used for the titles in the dub of Sailor Moon and Sailor Moon R


2014 Anime
(English) Crystal Part of the Sign They used Oh You Klid NF for *most* but not all of it. (Most likely a serif font) and then the C and T were manufactured.

Japanese sign is made up of Matise (again) and uses a Gothic font (Japanese) for the "bishoujo Senshi"

Pretty Guardian uses Occidental again.

Rina was used for La Reconquita part of the 20th year special, modified, most likely with the comma. It's free.

Imperator was used by drachearannak, but it was never used officially.


Personally, I favor Qarmic Sans for the bubbles in English since it feels very Sailor Moon.

General note about approximation Takeuchi-sensei tends to favor Art Deco and Art Nouveau fonts in general, especially for Sailor Moon. She also likes Art Nouveau style a lot, referencing it often. If you are to deviate from the base fonts and want to put a font on something else, Art Deco and Art Nouveau are you best font family shots.


About Internal fonts: I should note that making fonts is really time consuming, especially good ones from scratch. So a font that costs 400 dollars is cheap. Also that Kodansha, Shueisha, New York Times, Chicago, Apple, Adobe Microsoft, and the large organizations can do fonts in house for a few thousand dollars and stick their name in front of it. Adobe Garamond, for example. Or Times New Roman. So paying 400 dollars or 24 dollars is cheap for a font.

Tokyopop, however, never was. Any additional fonts would be either paid for or free.

DiC is less likely to hire than Toei, who is rich. Though Toei, being in animation, not a publishing industry is less likely to hire out than a publishing house.
